What alcohol can you drink on a keto diet?

The keto-safest alcoholic drinks are dry wines (red, white, rosé, and sparkling), spirits (vodka, gin, whisky, tequila — all contain 0g of carbs), and low-carb beers. The ones to avoid are: sweet wines, dessert wines, most mainstream lagers and ales (which contain 10–15g+ of carbs per pint), ciders, sweet cocktails, and liqueurs. At DrinkWell we focus on the wine and beer categories — curating only the products we can confirm at 0g sugar and minimal carbs.

Does wine have carbs?

Dry wines contain very few carbohydrates — typically 0–1.5g per 125ml glass. The carbs in wine come almost entirely from residual sugar (fermentable grape sugars that remain after fermentation). A wine with 0g of residual sugar contains essentially 0g of net carbs. Sweeter wines can contain 5–15g of carbs per glass, which is why wine choice matters on keto. Every wine in this collection is confirmed at 0g of sugar per serving.

Does beer have carbs?

Standard lager and ale is one of the highest-carb alcoholic drinks — a pint of Stella Artois contains around 17g of carbs, and a pint of Guinness around 18g. Low-carb beers are brewed using techniques that extend fermentation to convert more of the grain sugars into alcohol, resulting in a much lower carbohydrate content. The low-carb beers in our collection contain between 0.7g and 3.5g of carbs per can or bottle — a fraction of a standard pint.

What is the lowest carb alcohol?

Pure spirits (vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whisky) contain 0g of carbohydrates. Among wine, dry Brut Nature sparkling wine and dry still whites and reds with 0g of residual sugar come next, at 0–1.5g of carbs per 125ml. Low-carb beer sits slightly higher at 0.7–3.5g per can, but is still dramatically lower than standard beer or cider. Avoid anything sweet, fruity, or described as ‘medium’ — these almost always contain significant sugar.

Will drinking keto wine or beer kick me out of ketosis?

Dry wine and low-carb beer won't spike your blood sugar or add meaningful carbohydrates — the products in this collection all contain 0g of sugar. However, alcohol is metabolised as a priority over fat, meaning your body will pause fat-burning while it processes the alcohol. This doesn't kick you out of ketosis in the traditional sense, but it does slow the process temporarily. Moderate consumption of zero-sugar, low-carb drinks is generally compatible with a well-maintained keto lifestyle.
