Gluten Free Wine UK — Low Calorie, Zero Sugar, Confirmed Safe | DrinkWell
Wine is naturally gluten-free — but not all winemaking is. Some producers use wheat or barley-based fining agents during production that can introduce trace gluten into the finished bottle, and some wine is aged in barrels sealed with wheat paste. Every wine in this collection has been confirmed gluten-free at source, so whether you have coeliac disease, a non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, or are simply avoiding gluten, you can shop with confidence. Our gluten-free wine range spans reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling, and the majority are also low calorie and zero sugar — so you're not trading one compromise for another. Full allergen and nutritional information on every product page. Free delivery over £99.
Wine is made from fermented grapes, and grapes contain no gluten. The fermentation process itself introduces no gluten. In the vast majority of cases, wine is naturally gluten-free and safe to drink on a coeliac or gluten-free diet. However, there are two winemaking practices that can introduce trace gluten: the use of wheat- or barley-based fining agents to clarify the wine, and the use of wheat paste to seal oak barrel bungs during ageing. These practices are not universal, but they do occur — which is why we confirm gluten-free status for every wine in this collection at the producer level.
In most cases, yes. Coeliac UK states that most wine is likely to be gluten-free, though it cannot be guaranteed without producer confirmation. At DrinkWell, we take the extra step of confirming gluten-free status directly with producers for every wine in this collection — so customers with coeliac disease can shop with a higher level of confidence than a standard wine retailer provides. If you have coeliac disease, we'd recommend checking individual product pages for full allergen information and consulting your GP about alcohol consumption if in any doubt.
Fining agents are used to clarify wine by binding to suspended particles and helping them settle out of the liquid. Traditional agents include egg whites (albumin), milk protein (casein), fish-derived gelatin, and isinglass (from fish bladders) — none of which contain gluten. However, some producers have adopted wheat- or barley-based fining agents as a vegan-friendly alternative to animal-derived options. This is one of the routes by which gluten can enter wine — and one of the reasons confirming gluten-free status at the producer level matters.
The majority of wines in our gluten-free collection are also low calorie and zero sugar — because we apply both criteria when building our range. Gluten content and calorie content are unrelated (gluten-free winemaking doesn't automatically reduce calories), but at DrinkWell we curate specifically for both, so you don't have to choose between a wine that's safe for your diet and a wine that's kind to your waistline. Full calorie and sugar information is listed on every product page.
Not automatically — but there's a significant overlap. Vegan wines avoid animal-derived fining agents (egg whites, isinglass, casein), and some vegan alternatives do use wheat-based fining agents instead. This means a wine can be vegan but not gluten-free, or gluten-free but not vegan. At DrinkWell, we confirm both attributes independently for each product. Browse our vegan wine collection for vegan-only filtering, or our vegetarian wine collection for a broader dietary view.
