DrinkWell has compiled a wide and varied selection of gluten-free wines for you to enjoy. We have a wide range of gluten-free red wine, white wine and rose wine, all of which are taste tested by experts to ensure the maximum quality and taste.
Gluten is a protein that can cause all manner of health problems for people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Many people also opt to avoid gluten simply because their body feels healthier for doing so. But whatever your reason for avoiding gluten, it can be a very difficult diet to follow, with gluten forming part of many popular foods and drinks.
However, the amazing news is that wine is not something you need to avoid if you are following a gluten-free diet! As wine is made from either red or white grapes, the vast majority of wines are naturally gluten-free. The fermentation process used to make wine also does not involve any gluten. In almost every case, the level of gluten found in wine is below the legal limit of fewer than 20 parts per million of gluten, and therefore safe to consume on a gluten-free diet.
Unfortunately, though, you still need to have your wits about you when it comes to gluten in wine, as occasionally a very small amount of gluten can make its way into wine. This can be due to one of two factors. The first is the fining agents used in making the wine - due to the increased demand for vegan-friendly wines, some winemakers are opting to use gluten as a fining agent, rather than more traditional animal-based fining agents such as egg whites and gelatin. The other way that gluten can end up in wine is through contamination during ageing and storage - sometimes wine is stored in oak barrels that have been sealed using a wheat paste, which has the potential to contaminate the wine with gluten.
If you want to be sure that your wine does not contain gluten, you have come to the right place. DrinkWell clearly states whether all of our products are suitable for a gluten-free diet, meaning that you can rest assured that your wine won’t trigger any gluten-related symptoms for you.
At the time of writing, DrinkWell has a staggering 53 wines available in our gluten-free collection! These include lower-calorie wines, low/no carb wines, vegan-friendly wines and organic wines, so whatever your dietary requirements, we will have a gluten-free option to suit your needs.
We have gluten-free wines available across all wine colours. We have reds ranging from full-bodied and spicy merlots, such as Pico a Pico Carmenere Merlot, through to modern fruit-driven riojas, such as the bright and smooth Escena Rioja. With our varied collection of gluten-free white wines, we can cater for every taste - whether you prefer the fresh, crisp passion fruit notes of a Marlborough sauvignon blanc, such as the Mirror Lake Sauvignon Blanc, or lean more towards the creamy vanilla notes of a chardonnay, which you will find in the Oak Ridge Winery, 'Maggio', Lodi, Chardonnay 2019. Or if rose wine is more your tipple, we have a particularly high-quality collection of beautiful gluten-free provence rose wines, such as the bold and fruit forward Mirabeau X en Provence Rose, and the delicate Domaine De La Vielle Tour. If you are looking for something that little bit extra special, we also have a wide range of gluten-free prosecco and sparkling wines - in fact, you can buy a whole case of them with our ‘Bubbles, Darling’ case of 6 gluten-free bottles of fizz!
We know that a lot of our gluten-free customers are also keen to opt for lower-calorie wines where possible. The lowest calorie gluten-free wine we currently have available is Sunny with a Chance of Flowers - both the sauvignon blanc and pinot noir varieties contain just 64 calories per 125ml! Sunny wines are created to fit into a healthy lifestyle without giving up the flavour and texture that make wine so satisfying. As well as being lower in calories and gluten-free, Sunny wines have a lower ABV of 9%, making them the perfect accompaniment to a light lunch. If you are looking for stronger wine, our second lowest-calorie gluten-free wine is the 11% ABV Melon Blanc Vendage Nocturne, with 69 calories per 125ml. Hailing from the western Loire, this light-bodied yet tasty white wine pairs well with shellfish, seafood and grilled fish.
Here at DrinkWell, we believe that variety is the spice of life, so we have worked hard to source top quality gluten-free wines from across the globe! We have innovative and exciting wines from New World wine regions, such as Pico a Pico Carmenere Merlot from Chile, Cape Heights Chenin Blanc from South Africa, and Wildsong Organic Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Or if you have a more classical taste, we have many timeless Old World wines such as Crumsa Terres Rares Sauvignon Blanc from France, Ca'di Ponti Shiraz from Italy, and Vina Mariposa Tinto from Spain.
