Pinot Grigio Calorie Guide

Pinot Grigio Calorie Guide

It’s impossible to deny that a zesty glass of Pinot Grigio goes down very well on a warm summer’s day. Whilst it is most famously produced in Italy, many other countries also have their own Pinot Grigio offerings, including the US, Australia, Romania and New Zealand. With tasting notes including lemons, limes, green apples and honeysuckle, Pinot Grigio pairs well with a wide range of food including fish, pasta, chicken dishes and light cheeses such as mozzarella, making it a popular choice for both dining and daytime drinking.

But how much impact will a glass of Pinot Grigio have on your waistline? And how does the calories in a bottle of Pinot Grigio compare to other popular wines? This blog will answer all of your Pinot Grigio calorie questions, and we will introduce you to some of the lower-calorie Pinot Grigio options that we have available at DrinkWell.

How Many Calories Are in a Bottle of Pinot Grigio?

As a dry white wine, Pinot Grigio tends to contain fewer calories than other popular sweet or creamy alcoholic drinks. The calorie content will vary between different Pinot Grigios, and tends to be heavily influenced by both the residual sugar content and the ABV of the wine, as alcohol is responsible for most of the calories in wine. As a general rule of thumb, the higher the ABV of a bottle of Pinot Grigio, the higher the calorie content.

However, here at DrinkWell we are on a mission to source high quality Pinot Grigios that have lower calories without affecting the alcohol content. For example, our Woolloomooloo Pinot Grigio contains just 84 calories and 0.19g carbs per 125ml glass, whilst retaining an ABV of 13%.

How Many Calories Are in a Glass of Pinot Grigio?

orking on the basis that the average bottle of Pinot Grigio contains 623 calories, we can expect that a 125ml glass of Pinot Grigio will usually contain around 104 calories. That’s the equivalent of eating 2 digestive biscuits, to which you’d need to run for about 10 minutes to burn off.

DrinkWell is pleased to be able to offer a number of reduced calorie Pinot Grigio wines that contain considerably less calories per glass than the average white wine. Just to name a few, we have the Piattini Pinot Grigio which contains just 79 calories per 125ml glass, our Vino Pomona Pinot Grigio with 80 calories per glass, and our Dry River Pinot Grigio contains 84 calories per glass.

What Type of Wine Has the Least Calories?

The amount of calories in a wine depends on both its alcohol content and sugar content. Dry wines tend to contain significantly less calories than sweet wines as more sugar is converted during the fermentation process.

Grape varieties tend not to make much difference in calorie content across the different wine colours. For example, according to DrinkAware, a 175ml glass of red wine contains 160 calories, whilst the same size glass of white wine contains 159 calories, just one calorie less. Rose wine, however, does tend to contain slightly less calories due often having a lower alcohol content - Drink Aware estimates a 175ml glass of Rose to contain around 147 calories.

Amongst white wines, chardonnay wines tend to have a slightly higher number of calories compared to a pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc. If red is your go-to wine colour, opting for a pinot noir or merlot will generally provide you with less calories than the likes of a cabernet sauvignon or malbec.

The table below (based on information from the USDA) shows the average calories per 150ml glass of different types of wines. You’ll see that Pinot Grigio falls somewhere mid-table.
